Wudangtiger Neijia Quan Gong Fu is a martial art. Neijia Quan is a shorter title. “Neijia” means “internal school” and “Quan” means “fist”. Names of Chinese Gong Fu (“Kung Fu”) styles normally end in “Quan”. “Wudangtiger” is the nick name of the person who teaches the method. This method of Gong Fu is based on Wudang Tai Chi Chuan as taught by Dan Docherty, but adds extra elements from various full-contact fighting styles, as well as from other health disciplines. It is not designed as a holistic health system, but does bring substantial health benefits. Attention is not focused so much on the hand form but on basic fitness and martial techniques. The objective is to be able to fight, and for that one must be in good health. The method is taught by Philip Brown, a long-term student of well-known Tai Chi master Dan Docherty and practitioner of health and fighting systems for about 30 years. Philip decided to use the name “Neijia Quan” for his teaching in order to focus on fighting skills. Most people interested in Taiji Quan (Tai Chi Chuan) typically are not interested in effective fighting arts and cannot or will not follow the Neijia Quan training. This is true as much in the East as in the West. However, to further the understanding of Wudang Tai Chi Chuan, teaching can focus only on that, without the more demanding martial arts fitness and technique work. |
